I started my nmp with looking at old competition briefs – because that’s what I enjoy working on. And because this brief was for 14 weeks I had to choose something that I wouldn’t get bored of. While looking at old briefs I found roses’ awards 2011 brief which was – Laughter is best medicine package it, sell it make people laugh. Since I read that brief I knew I wanted to do something about laughing or smiling – basically positivity. But initial idea was packaging different types of laughter. But I then drifted my interest to pure happiness. I looked into what really happiness is. Biggest inspirational campaigns I found were Coco cola and Dove. They both do positive campaigns to either to share happiness or boost self confidence. I love the positive messages behind it. So After thinking into different directions I came to make decision on spreading smiles on others faces, spreading goodness makes you happy. That is the exact positive message I wanted bring across so I decided ‘Do good, feel good’.
While working on this I had another idea- same about happiness- but with a little twist. Appreciate what you got - happiness. Idea behind that was making people feel guilty for complaining 24 hours for patty things like the weather, some people shiver in cold with rags. But I realised that even though it did have a positive message behind it, It wasn’t really positive – it was bit too dark project and I wanted something playful bright and happy. So I decided to scarp that idea and stick to my original.
When I started designing for that idea My initial slogan was ‘just a little smile’ which was just a smile awareness campaign. I originally started designing just based. – On how is smiling good for us? But after the feedback in seminars I realised it looked too weak just with the type. So I started experimenting with the pictures I found from Google. But it didn’t really work well, its still looked really weak. So I decided to do my own photo-shoot with people at uni. For the shoot I needed natural laughter, which is hard to capture when you are terrible at jokes. So I decided to write down dares for them. I was really happy with the images I got from that photo-shoot – I managed to make them laugh. After I got my content I started designing the actually campaign. I first started with doing my stop motion film vector based. Skills I learnt from procon 2 motion last year really helped me to work on After effects and later edit music on final cut pro. Motion piece originally was supposed to just give them task such as ‘…start as small as opening for door someone.’ But later After everything came together as full campaign decided just have ‘…join our campaign to share goodness.’
For the whole campaign I decided to use blue and yellow as my main colours because it suited the theme really well.
After designing this, I decided to do a one week brief of future lions, Where I chose to connect students with netwest and I gave it a little twist by calling it
Notwaste- because students are tend to spend and not save. I really enjoyed working under strict deadline, because I then had plan for each day on what to do.
Later I again did a short brief called ‘being small’ which I started with just doing the illustrations about benefits of being small but I wanted something more to it, so I decided to make a board game called ‘being small’. Which didn’t only have benefits but also disadvatages. I really enjoyed working on this. It helped me become even more confident with my illustrator skills.
While doing all these three projects on side I was redesigning a website for EMDB. And also coding it. But unfortunately because of lack communication from the client I wasn’t given much information on the content of the website. So I have coded it in very simple way and when they get back to me I will continue coding.
Overall NMP has been a great experience, with lots of ups and downs. It’s a shame that there will no more be working under pressure for a grade anymore.
Final motion piece - changes made after talking to Tash.
Changes- added the 2nd really? and sorted the ending of music so now it’s fading.
